Overview & Highlights

Lou Xiang Seafood Porridge is a beloved porridge restaurant nestled in the heart of Simpang Ampat, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Specializing in comforting, seafood-centric porridge dishes, this local gem offers visitors an authentic taste of Penang’s coastal flavors, served in a setting that feels both inviting and traditional.

At Lou Xiang Seafood Porridge, the star of the menu truly shines with their signature Crab Porridge, a dish consistently praised for its fresh, meaty crab pieces simmered to perfection in a rich, savory broth that soaks deep into every grain of porridge. The depth of flavor here is simply remarkable—each spoonful delivers a harmonious balance of ocean-fresh seafood and delicate seasoning that warms the soul.

Beyond the signature crab dish, the menu boasts an intriguing variety of tomyam porridge options, like the Bihun Tomyam: a spicy Thai-inspired rice vermicelli soup, enlivened with shrimp, mushrooms, and fragrant lemongrass. Another delight is the Bean Vermicelli Tomyam, infused with aromatic herbs and zesty lime, offering a fresh and tangy kick that excites the palate. The addition of savory extras like sliced abalone, bacon, or swim bladder elevates the porridge to a personal, indulgent feast.

What truly sets Lou Xiang apart, besides the impeccable freshness of their seafood, is the way their menu embraces simplicity without sacrificing flavor. Many dishes are steamed or boiled, allowing the natural sweetness of ingredients like clams, fish balls, and prawns to shine through. The fish balls, noted for their springy texture and freshness, are a particular favorite among patrons. The accompanying herbal tea, Luo Han Guo, provides a surprisingly refreshing complement to the meal, rounding out the experience.

The atmosphere at Lou Xiang Seafood Porridge captures an unpretentious charm, with options for air-conditioned seating or open-air dining that lets you soak in the lively local vibe. The friendly, attentive service further enhances the relaxed dining experience, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring Penang’s culinary and cultural treasures.

Patrons consistently praise the restaurant’s dedication to quality—“seafood very fresh, foods tastes delicious,” said one regular, while another highlighted the “rich and flavourful” broth that makes every meal memorable. Although located a bit off the beaten path, most agree that the journey is well worth it for the generous portions and authentic flavors.

Turn in from highway due to heavy traffic to Penang. Found this gem from google map. We ordered seafood porridge, steam lala, lohbak n vegi. Seafood very fresh, foods tastes delicious Too good until I forgotten to take photos Will definitely come again to try other dishes.

One of the local favorite restaurant. The signature roasted crab is good but the price is abit on the high side. Noodles and porridge are decent. Rose oil chicken is one of a kind and worth the try! Overall a good restaurant that I would recommend.

The location is quite far from town. But food is good. Portion is good. Serving time could be improved but generally ok. The crabs are delicious. The prawn was however not as fresh as they need to get it defrosted before cooking. Overall good.

If you're in Penang, I highly recommend visiting Lou Xiang restaurant. They are famous for their crab porridge, and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious! I had a fantastic experience there and I highly recommend giving it a try. You won't be disappointed! What we had : Crab porridge RM214 * I highly recommend the crab porridge! It was superb with big and meaty crab that was fresh and sweet. The broth was also so flavorful. This was heartwarming and comforting. Soy sauce chicken Rm18 * This was simply amazing! It was incredibly tender, bursting with flavor, and so juicy. Octopus Rm18 * The blanched octopus was really delicious! Perfectly cooked, tender, and paired perfectly with sweet chilli sauce. Steamed lala Rm20 * The steamed clams were fresh, and the sauce was a delicious combination of sour, spicy, and garlicky flavours. Satay * The satay we ordered from the stall opposite the restaurant was actually quite good. The meat was tender, not overly fatty, and the sweetness was just right. Steamed prawn Rm98 *Unfortunately, it was nothing special. The meat lacked sweetness and was overcooked. I felt it wasn't worth the price. Total : Rm379/4px

The food here is very delicious! The seafood porridge is rich and flavourful, and the crab porridge is also really good. The fish ball is my favourite, fresh and bouncy, and the lala is tasty too. Overall, a great place for seafood lovers and those who enjoy local porridge dishes. Total bill was around RM89, quite reasonable for the portion and quality.

The food is good, and the seafood is FRESH. I went there few times and they never disappoint me. They serve a very simple menu, almost everything is boiled or steamed. But it doesn’t affect the taste as the seafood is fresh enough. The herbal tea Luo Han Guo is surprisingly good as well. The atmosphere is fine, you can choose to sit in the air conditioned section, but the outdoor seating does have a lot of flies. Overall, it’s a decent place and worth repeating visits.

Good place to eat with friends at night. Good food. Reasonable price.
